Anthony T. Poszywak

Anthony T. Poszywak, 92, of Weirton passed away Thursday December 11, 2003, at the Weirton Medical Center.
He was born January 3, 1911,in Pittsburgh, Pa.; the son of the late Gregory and Anna Sanicka Poszywak. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Poszywak, and two sisters, Helen Latynski, and Mary Len.
Anthony retired from the City of Weirton, where he worked as a treatment plant operator. Tony served his country during World War II, in the US Army, 11th Armored Division, 55th Infantry. He was a member and usher of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, the Golden Age Club of the Church, the Polish National Alliance, and the PRCU.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Sitarz Poszywak of Weirton; four sons, Anthony and his wife Karen of Follansbee, WV, Joseph of Weirton, Leonard and his wife Laurie of Richmond, Texas, Stanley and his wife Jill of Charlotte, NC; two daughters, Bernadette Kester and her husband Terry and Mary Ann Poszywak both of Weirton, WV.; seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday from 7-9 PM and Sunday from 1-3 and 7-9 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St, Weirton, WV.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Monday at Sacred Heart of Mary Church, Weirton.
Interment will follow at St Paul Cemetery, Weirton.

I will raise your family up in prayer. Tony will be missed by the whole community. The only consolation is that heaven has gained another angel.
My dear friends, How many wonderful memories flood through my head even in this time of great loss for you. Your father, Tony, was a gem of a gentleman! He treated everyone with great respect and warmth. His talents were many and shared, equally, by many — he was so giving — so willing to give — so full of smiles. I’m sure he was Gen’s number one “shunshine boy”! And, for many treasued years at that. Tony was a history maker in the SHM community, from the days when he orchestrated the parish band from the bell tower of the old North Weirton Church for the First Mass of Fr. Matt Truszkoma (1935) to these recent years as a valued usher. He was a true man of prayer that, like the good St. Joseph, was a wonderul husband and father — always trusting in the Lord’s will for him. His carpentry skills(wooden plant items) were even a valued part of a fund raiser in St. Louis, MO, for the Fransciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help two summers ago. He was a master chef: pierogies, jams, you name it! Truly loved his apple cobbler to boot! I could go on and on, as my memories are many. Even as I know his loss is a painful thing for you, and I’m sure that it could only be profound as we all recall what a wonderful part his presence played in our lives. Yet, even as I feel the loss, my heart is light as I clack out this message at my computer — my heart is light because I feel Tony’s loving and wonderful ways this very moment as it is naturally a part of these memories. Each of my thoughts of him is embued with his warmth. It is a humbling thing to be able to say, “I knew Tony Poszywak.” Because to be able to say this is like being able to say, “I knew someone who was so Christ-like!” Even though I can’t be in Weirton at this time, and will not be home for Christmas, I will sing my Kolendy — recalling many a Christmas when our families were together singing, sharing and celebrating. And when I sing, I’ll here Tony singing too! And, most of all, I will thank God for the blessings of Tony in this life he lived — I will thank God for the many blessings that Tony was to me personally. I will also know that Tony is in that place of eternal life sharing the joy of God’s presence face to face. What a wonderful Christmas for Tony! And for us, yes there will be some tears, but we will never forget how rich our lives have been because of this gem of a gentleman! With my fondest love and prayers… your friend … Stas Tuchalski

A devoted husband, father and son. A musician who played the sax and clarinet was also and artist and woodworker who entertained everyone with his creativity and many talents. He was a Polish gentleman with servitude being his golden attribute. Although a quiet and gentle man, he had an iron will and earned three battle stars liberating Europe in WW II under Patton serving as barber, interpreter and half-track driver while courageously moving his buddies onward with an unwavering faith as a Roman Catholic and his harmonica. Quietly staying to his many virtues. He lived his life as an example to all, making his family and God proud. Determined and proud, he never swaye from the rosary and put his trust in God’s plan. He had a special relationship with his wife and the Virgin Mary who on several occasions protected him and worked miracles in response to his unselfish prayers as his crystal red rosary attests. A self-educated man with only a 6th grade education; he became an accomplished musician, earned a degree as a Master Mechanic, and worked at that skill for many years. he was a talented craftsman who could make something from nothing, a peirogi maker, and apple pie baker, a gardener, and made the best current jellies ever tasted. Dad created a merry-go-round from and old round table top and a truck axle which he used to entertain his six kids and seven granchildren. He had a heart of gold and countless friends that called him Dad. Missed but never forgotten; his influence continues to brighten the lives of many. he lives in the cheer fo a family gathering, a side-splitting laugh and a tender hand on my shoulder. Love you Dad-see you on the other side. From All of us.
Thank you Lord for blessing our family with a loving and true father for so many wonderful years. Thy will be done. Through your mercy, accept him into your loving arms and guide us so we may one day be reunited in your kingdom.
