barbara matey
MATEY, Dr. Barbara Ann, 65, beloved spouse of Arthur E. Matey, departed this earth on Sunday September 1, 2013, from the Valley Hospice North Care Center in Steubenville, Ohio. Barbara was born August 6, 1948, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Charles and Pauline (Hreha) Tokar. Her youth was spent learning her devotion to Christ, love of family and friends and tremendous work ethic from her parents. After graduation from Westinghouse Memorial High School, Barbara continued her education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. While working various jobs, she graduated in 1970 with a double Major in English and Education and accepted a position as a teacher in the South Allegheny School District in McKeesport, PA. She continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh where she graduated with a 4.0 and earned a Master's in Education 1972. After she married Arthur Matey on July 12, 1980, and moved to Weirton, WV, she immersed herself in Weirton and continued to enjoy working with high school students. Eventually, she decided to discontinue the commute and began years of working in various capacities for West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) and the former Weirton Steel Corporation. Her positions included faculty, public relations, business and industrial training, and program coordination at WVNCC. Within the mill, she worked in training and process reengineering for the commercial department, business information technologies department, integrated manufacturing, and various training capacities. She earned her Doctorate of Education in Technology Education and presented her dissertation on Training and System Implementation Impact Study in 2002. Devoted to excellence, she did this while continuing to work and earned a 4.0 on her doctorate work. In November 2001, she found her employment home with Hancock County Savings Bank, FSB. It was there that she was happiest performing professionally and fulfilling her mission of community service in various capacities. She was currently serving as Vice President of Human Resources. Her recent service included a multi-year member of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce on which she chaired the Education Committee, chairing the Youth Leadership Program and chairing the high School Business Symposium. Additionally, Dr. Matey served as a board member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for the Wheeling area Chapter; chaired the Women's Golf Classic for the Weirton United Way as well as many other United Way volunteer projects. She served as a volunteer and annual bell ringer with Arthur for the Salvation Army. She further volunteered as a member of Hancock County Sheltered Workshop, Hancock County Animal Shelter, Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Business Department Advisory Council at the Rockefeller Career Center, HCSB's Partner in Education Program. Dr. Matey also taught parent education classes such as budgeting to Head Start parents and served as a board member of Campfire Girls. Her commitment to her community was second only to her passion for her church family and their projects. A committed and serious Orthodox Christian, she was Carpathian-Russian by ethnicity though Serbian by association in that she joined the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church of Steubenville, Ohio, when she moved here and sought a church that still followed the Julian church calendar. Her many years of dedication to the parish include untold projects of weekly humble service. Barbara could always be found chopping vegetables or doing dishes at any church event. Moreover, she lent her administrative and leadership talents and was a multi-term member of the parish council serving often as Secretary of Council, multi-term member of the Board of Directors of the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton, often holding the office of the Secretary of the Board; a member of the Church's Petar Krstich Choir. She further served as co-editor and printing advisor for the commemorative books for the dedication of the Serbian American Cultural Center in 1997 and the Church's 100th Anniversary in 2006. In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Joy Yetman and brother-in-law, John Saxon. She leaves to mourn, her devoted husband, Arthur Matey; his brother, Eugene (Anna Mae) and their children Eric and Renee'(Wes Stokes); sister-in-law, Nancy Saxon, and her children, John (Natalie) and Richard (Noreen) and their children. Her blessed godchildren and caregivers, Nicole Balakos and Denise Stewart and their families; as well as many devoted friends, coworkers and extended family members will miss her wisdom, companionship and love. Visitation will be 5- 8 PM Tuesday at the at Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church 528 North Fourth Street Steubenville, OH. Pomen Services will be held 7:30 PM Tuesday in the church. Additional visitation will be 10 AM until time of funeral services at 11 AM Wednesday at the church. Interment will follow at the Serbian Cemetery. Barbara loved flowers in her life. In her honor, she would prefer that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to be made to a charity that speaks to the donor's heart among the following: Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 528 N 4th St, Steubenville, OH 43952; Tony Teramana Cancer Center, 3204 Johnson Road, Steubenville, OH, 43952; Hancock County Animal Shelter, 715 Gas Valley Road, New Cumberland, WV 26047; or Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943.

  3. Dear Art, I was so shocked and sorry to read of Barb’s death. We had lost contact in the past few years and never could seem to get together but she was often in my thoughts. She was one beautiful lady inside and out and I will never forget all the kind and thoughtful things she did for me and my children over the years. I was so fortunate to have worked with her so much at WVNCC and there was never a better friend or co-worker than Miss Barbara; she was wonderful and I will cherish all our lunches, laughs, program reviews and classroom planning, etc…she was the best. Bless you, Art and thanks for sharing Barbara with all of us.

  5. To the family of Barb,

Sorry to learn of Barb’s illness and passing. I knew her years ago from Saxon Jewelers and she was my instructor in classes at Weirton Steel. She was a very intelligent, kind person. May she rest in peace.

  6. On behalf of Barb’s high school classmates ~ Westinghouse Memorial High School, I pass along our sincere sympathy to her family & friends. Barb was a beautiful person inside and our, so intelligent & always treated her fellow classmates with respect and kindness. She achieved much in her short life and will be missed by many.

  7. Barbara was the consummate professional in everything that she did and with whom all she interacted. She was a giving person who left her community, her employer, her family, and friends with wonderful memories and valuable contributions. I had the pleasure of working with her on Chamber committees and being one of her students. Her charm, talents, skills, and most importantly, spirit shall be missed by many, including myself. I wish to extend my sympathy, prayers, and sincere condolences to her family on their bereavement.

We are so sorry to hear of Barb’s passing. She was a very nice person and will be missed. Our prayers are with you.

  9. I was Barbara’s fifth grade teacher at Green Valley. She was an excellent student and a very sweet child. None of her accomplishments, though many, surprise me. What a magnificent life she led using the talents God gave her! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
