Charles F. Greco, 88, of Murrells Inlet, SC, formerly of Fairmont and Weirton, WV husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and esteemed member of the funeral service community, passed away on Saturday August 12, 2023, in Murrells Inlet, SC. His first wife, Patty will no doubt greet him with class and dignity, with the words, I could have told you…

Charles was born in Fairmont, WV, on December 19, 1934, one of two children born to Anthony “Tony” and Martha “Virgina: DiCea Greco.
Charles graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1952. He had a passion for the Weirton community, and his journey in life was filled with kindness, success, and a profound commitment to helping others in their times of need. He would always say “Throw away your watch and take care of the people.”

In his early years, Charlie hitchhiked to Weirton, WV, at the encouragement of Dr. Ray, Victor, Johnny and Joe Greco. There, he started his career at Hertnick’s Funeral Home driving the ambulance and service car, in the Summer of 53. It was at Hertnick’s Funeral Home that he met Joan Patricia “Patty” Hertnick, whom he married on August 25, 1956. Together, they raised two daughters and a son and were blessed with two grandsons, three granddaughters, and a great-granddaughter.

Driven by a desire to serve, Charles pursued higher education, graduating from West Virginia University and continuing on as a graduate of the Class of 1958 Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. Alongside his devoted wife Patty, they became the owners and operators of the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home for over 40 years. Under their care and guidance, the funeral home has become an institution in the community, standing for over a century in Downtown Weirton. Their legacy continues through their son, John, who now owns and operates the funeral home and crematory.

In addition to his work in Weirton, Charles owned the Bavington Inn in Bavington, PA. He also expanded his contributions to the funeral service profession, acquiring and managing the Lynch Stacy Greco Funeral Home in Clarksburg, WV. His dedication to the funeral profession extended to his role on the West Virginia Board of Funeral Service Examiners, where he served for 17 years, even holding the position of President of the board. Charles was appointed to the board by 3 West Virginia Governors Moore, Rockefeller, and Caperton. He also achieved the prestigious distinction of being the first West Virginian to serve as President of the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards and the American Board of Funeral Service Education. His firm was invited to join the National Selected Morticians in 1971. The funeral home has been honored with this distinction for over 50 years.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Charlie will be remembered for his generosity, warm smile, and easygoing spirit. He cherished the company of his friends, sharing countless meals and conversations with them. Whether it was going to breakfast, lunch, or dinner, he treasured every moment of camaraderie with friends like George Huxie – Sarge Mergen, Jimmy Zerkle, John T. Grossi, Bill Marino, Tom Sessi, Chas Marino, Romie Castelli, Don Gianni, Andy DiFonzo, Ed Klee, Emmanuel Starvaggi, Jeff Jezierski, Morris Chijner, Lenny Shaw, Chappy Ballato, Al Lauttamus, Nick Hawley, and Richard Wilburn, just to name a few.

Charlie’s life was one of dedication to his friends, and the communities he served. He was always concerned about the funeral home. His daily calls to his son John would always start out with “You busy” and end with “I love you all.” His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of compassion, service, and camaraderie will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Mary Zick (Jeff) and Michelle Gallaway (Walt), and his son John Charles (Susan) Greco. He also leaves behind his grandchildren W. Michael (Michelle) Bettinazzi, Elle M. and Eliza P. Greco, Jeffry, and Katerina Zick, and his great-granddaughter, Olivia; his sister, Anna Marie Durham; his spouse of the last 15 years Faye Powers and their beloved dog Franklin; his nieces, nephews many cousins.

Visitation will be 5-7 PM Wednesday and 3 – 7 PM Thursday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV

His funeral will be held at 10 AM Friday at Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Weirton.

He will be laid to rest with his family at Saint Paul’s Cemetery.

His children and grandchildren thank Debi McKenzie, Myrlee Powers and Richard Wilburn for all the love and care they gave to our father and grandfather during his time in South Carolina and with his recent illness.

In memory of Charlie, please go out and enjoy camaraderie with your friends, buy them breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

  6. Dear John, Mary & Michelle,
Our families have been close to one another for generations. Your Mom & mine were childhood friends and growing up down the street from you guys made that relationship easy to continue. Charlie (and Patty) were my first employers…starting in the sixth grade as I recall.

Those years spent at the funeral home helped ease me into my future medical career. For that and so much more, I will always be grateful to your Dad, Mom, and the entire Greco family. My sincere condolences on your loss.

  7. Sending my deepest condolences and prayers for your family. Your dad so was so very kind to Rick & I at a very difficult time in our lives & I aways appreciated the care he showed us🙏

  8. Sending our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to Charlie’s family. He was such a good friend to our father, Nick Hawley. The weekday Golden Egg breakfasts with Charlie and Richard were epic and so important to my dad. Nick always missed Charlie and Richard when he returned to Illinois, especially now that he cannot travel to SC. Charlie has been in his thoughts every single day. And you’re right, when you think of Charlie, you think of his beautiful smile. May Our Good Lord hold Charlie in the palm of His hand.

  9. Candle Selection 7We’ll miss Uncle Charlie dearly. Our prayers go out to his loved ones for the loss of their treasured father and husband.

  10. Michelle, Mary, John and all of your families, I will always remember his smile and warm demeanor. I remember my dad saying how he stopped in to see Charlie and helped him with a body (to which I was mortified as a kid lol) Mike and I extend our thoughts and prayers to you all. Much love. Marlene and Mike Stevic

    • Charlie was a great friend to my dad, Nick Hawley and our entire family. He always generously, willingly and gladly offered to pick us up from the airport in Myrtle Beach when any of us came down to visit Dad’s place in Surfside Beach. We have many fond memories meeting ‘the boys’ at The Golden Egg for breakfast and often California Dreaming for drinks and dinner. Faye, Micheal and I offer our sincere condolences to you. To the entire Greco family whom we have never met, we are so sorry for your loss.
We share in your sadness, we loved him too.

  11. Charlie was very kind to me, greeting you with a smile and always a mild mannered gentleman. After reading his obituary I learned he worked hard, was well respected in the funeral industry and of his many accomplishments and honors. My prayer is that he is now at peace. To all the family, hold the wonderful memories close to heart, they will bring a smile, joy and laughter in the coming days… as you remember Charlie and the legacy he left to each of you.

    Sincerely,
    Kay Benton
    Murrells Inlet SC

  12. The Weirton Community has been served very well by the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home Family, and Charlie Greco was a very big part of it. With Charlie Greco’s passing, It is an end of an era. I wish to convey my condolences to the Greco Family as well as to our community for the loss of Charlie Greco. He will be well remembered for the person to go to in a time of need.

  13. Our deepest sympathy Charlie was a wonderful man. Bob and I had lugg nuts stolen from our car not far from Bavington Inn. We walked back there and Charlie true to form started asking other customers if each one could spare a lugg nut. We got safely home and will never forget his kindness he went above and beyond. May he rest in eternal peace. To his family love, hugs and prayers

  16. Candle Selection 7John, Mary, Michelle and your families,
To grow up in Weirton was to be greeted and to know Charlie and Patty Greco whenever we entered the front door for a visitation or wake. Your parents operated with a kindness and excellence beyond measure to the entire community, especially the thousands of families experiencing loss and grief. The patio above the front porch at 3219 Main Street was a landmark of distinction in Weirton for decades as dignitaries and special guests enjoyed the annual Christmas and Fourth of July Parades. The life-story obituary says it all and conveys what a remarkable man of distinction Charles F. Greco truly was. Please know of my prayerful support as you grieve his absence in this life. Your trust and faith in God will supply comfort and heal the pain you experience. You are your father’s legacy and represent the Greco name so very well.
    Love and prayers, Stan

  24. Candle Selection 5John,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of your father. One memory I remember is when he had a funeral at Sacred Heart of Mary, on Avenue , the choir above would look over to see the man with the fedora and let Sister know it was time to start the procession. Your dad is at peace knowing hat a great son he has to carry on.

    • Candle Selection 5Review from Rita Ruszkowski. It was Avenue F and (hay) is to read he has a great and talented son to carry on the Greco Hertnick tradition.

  25. Me C was one of the finest men I have ever met. He was so humble and so compassionate. We always talked football and I loved it when may team beat his. He would give me that quiet little chuckle and I would say”well maybe you will beat me the next time”😂. I LOVED HIM VERY MUCH AND I WILL TRULY MISS HIM. To know Mr C was to love him. Jennifer and I want to express our deepest sympathy for you all. John, we go back 50 years in our friendship. Although I am deeply saddened by the news of your father’s passing, I can’t help but sit back, reflect on all the good times walking a block away on West St. to the funeral home. We used to bug your father everyday to load our mini bikes in that station wagon so we can ride the trails at Starvaggi pool. He always made time for us. I see this in you as a grown man. You give that same generosity to many people as Charles did. He truly loved you all and was a very proud father.
