debby stump

Deborah Lea “Nan” Stump, 69, of Weirton, WV, died on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, following a courageous nine-month battle with lung cancer. Her passing came just one day shy of her 70th birthday.

Born on July 10, 1955, in Weirton, Debby was one of seven children of the late Robert and Evelyn Tustin Thompson. She graduated with the Class of 1973 from Union High School in Burgettstown, PA, and went on to a 35-year career as the Dietary Supervisor at Weirton Medical Center.

On September 17, 1977, Debby married the love of her life, Walter “Rick” Stump, who fondly remembers it as love at first sight. With her striking red hair and blue eyes, Debby was a true fireball— sassy, and fiercely protective of those she loved. She was “Nan” to many, and her presence was a cherished constant in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends alike.

Together, Debby and Rick built a beautiful family, blessed with two daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Nan’s home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the scent of something delicious simmering on the stove—especially her famous spaghetti sauce and poor man’s gravy. She found great joy in camping at Ponderosa Park, for over 20 years and sitting on her front porch with neighbors, coffee in hand, catching up on the latest “scuttlebutt.”

Debby’s love for old-time country music was unmatched. She was “country when country wasn’t cool.”

She nurtured her faith at Christ United Methodist Church in Weirton.

In addition to her parents, Debby was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Thompson and her sister, Wanda Recht.

She will be missed by her husband, Walter “Rick” Stump; her daughters, Erica Rodriguez and Bonnie Jo Teefy (Dennis); her grandchildren, Megan Reed (Joshua), Joseph Rodriguez, Morgan, Samuel, and Elijah Teefy; her great-grandchildren, Levi Anthony Rodriguez and Aiden Hazel Rose Reed; and her sisters, Donna Ford (Jerry), Alda Malone (Randy), Vickie Santek, and Andrea Callahan; and many friends she made along her way.

Family and friends will be received on Friday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, from 2:00 PM until the time of her funeral service at 4:00 PM, with Rev. Larry Barkley officiating.

Privately she will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Weirton.

In memory of Debby, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
