Donald Leroy Smith, 75, of Weirton, passed away peacefully at his residence on the afternoon of Saturday, April 19, 2025, with his loving family by his side.

Born on July 16, 1949, in Steubenville, Don was one of three children born to George W. and Edith Smith.

He was a 1967 graduate of Weir High School and dedicated over thirty years of service to Weirton Steel, retiring as a Pickler Operator.

Known for his remarkable work ethic and even sharper wit, he was respected by colleagues and loved by friends for his charm and knack for storytelling. His memory was legendary—he never forgot a name, a face, or a punchline, especially when it came to the countless coon hunting tales, he shared time and again, each one cherished as if it were new.

An avid outdoorsman, Don found joy and peace in the forests and rivers. He especially loved fishing in the Potomac River and hunting bear in the wilds of Canada. A true sportsman, he often traveled to Georgia to hunt wild pig and always looked forward to hunting and fishing trips with his beloved son, Brian.

Don’s passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers was fierce and enduring. One of his most treasured memories was attending the Super Bowl in Miami, where the Steelers triumphed over the Dallas Cowboys. There, he had the chance to share a beer with Steelers legend Rocky Bleier, and later, he attended a roast of the iconic Jack Lambert—moments he recounted with pride and a twinkle in his eye.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death his brother-in-law Les Bellanco.

Left to cherish Don’s memory are his wife pf fifty-four years Linda Wade Smith of Weirton, sons, Brian (Dawn) Smith of Follansbee, Ronald (Tammy) Smith of Weirton, and Keith (Christie) Smith of Colliers, brother Ronnie (Susan) Smith of Weirton, sister Regina Bellanco, of Florida grandchildren Kaleb Smith and Haylee, Ryley Smith and Ashley, Chayse, Gabriel, and Eli Smith, Tanisha and Christa, great-grandchildren, Leah, Ameliah, and Christian, and his four-legged trio named respectfully, “The Kids,” Jeff, Debbie, and Shelby Rae.

Don’s request for cremation will be honored.

He will be cremated at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home Crematory, located at 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV.

Don leaves behind a legacy of stories, laughter, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at the convenience of his family.
