Ethel Apesos, 88, of Weirton passed away quietly in her home on Thursday, September 17, 2015. Born on April 1, 1927, in Clarksburg, WV, Ethel is the wife of Markos Apesos of Weirton, WV. She was a daughter of the late George and Maria Georgiafandis. Also preceding her in death were brothers Nick and Stanley Georgiafandis of Steubenville and Steve Georgiafandis of Chicago. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind a daughter, Georgene Horton of Follansbee and a son, Steve Apesos of Massachusetts; a daughter-in-law Joanne Clary Apesos and son-in-law Jay Horton; three grandchildren Mary and Marc Apesos and John Horton; and two great grandchildren Dylan and Anastasia Horton. She also leaves behind a sister Julia Moutsatsos of Steubenville, a brother John Georgiafandis of Shreveport, LA, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was known as someone who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and as an active volunteer for youth, church, school and senior organizations. Ethel was a long-time member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton. She was involved in many church activities throughout the years as a Sunday school teacher, Camp Fire Girls director, and as a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and Senior Citizens. Ethel spent many years with her husband in Cub Scout Pack 131 and Boy Scout Troop 131 of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. She helped originate and organize dozens of scouting events including the annual Blue and Gold Dinners. She loving called the many young men and women of the church who were members of scouting as "her girls and boys". Visitation will be on Sunday, September 20th from 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where the Trisagion Service will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held Monday from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral services at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. The Rev. Fr. Frank A. Milanese will officiate. Interment will follow in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Florence, PA. Memorial donations may be offered to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and/or Valley Hospice.
