george velegol
George Patrick Velegol, a caring and involved community advocate, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020. He was 72. George was born in Weirton, WV, on August 31, 1948, the only child born to Joseph Patrick and Julia A. Smrek Velegol. A lifelong resident of Weirton, George retired from Weirton Steel with over 35 years of service as a pipefitter. He was very involved with the Weirton Heights Volunteer Fire Department, and along with Joe Stankiewicz, built the first ambulance. At the age of 18, George started attending Weirton City Council meetings and attended most of the meetings for over fifty years. Ask George a question about the City, and he would certainly know the answer. Most of all, George will be remembered for his loving and caring nature. He was always helping his friends and neighbors with their projects. Some of his friends called him the general, and some just called him smiling because he always had a smile on his face. One friend said, "If George could not fix it, then it wasn't broken!” George was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 3734, and the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club. He will be remembered with love by his wife of 46 years, Mary Pulice Velegol; his two sons, Adam (Patricia) Velegol of Westerville, OH, and Aaron (Kelly) Velegol of Weirton, WV; his grandchildren, Jonathan, Justin, Kayla, and Paige Velegol; and his dog, Trix. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM Tuesday at the Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, in Weirton. Fr. Tony Thurston will preside. Interment will follow at Saint Paul Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, 229 California Avenue Weirton, WV 26062. 1. Our cousin George deserve an A plus – star – smiley face for being a wonderful person. As a youngster he often traveled back and forth to Clarksburg with his father Joe and mother Julia – two outstanding parents who were responsible for introducing my wife and I 58 years ago – thank God for them. George’s best friend in Clarksburg was his cousin Billy Shack. They had a great knack of being mischievous as they grew up. George functioned ever so well within his own knit family but with the larger, much larger families of his mother and father. George always tried to do his best. His life was indeed well lived. His children and their families were blessed to have such as good father and grandfather. Our condolence to their families on their loss. With deep sympathy, Carolyn and David Velegol

  2. Mary I sent you a message on Facebook, but I wasn’t sure if you would see it. I just wanted to send you my sympathies during this difficult time, and especially during this holiday season. REMEMBER: Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal BUT Love leaves memories that no one can steal. Thinking of you and God Bless.

  3. The world has really lost a great guy! Will miss seeing his smiling face — may he rest in peace! Deepest sympathy to the family.

  4. So very sorry to hear of George’s passing. We remember him growing up on Denise Drive all those years ago. Was always such a nice man. Our thoughts and prayers for your family. Sincerely, Michael and Toni ( Orlando) Gurskey
