jeanette shields

Jeanette Lee Shields, 81, of Weirton, WV, passed away on January 8, 2026, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. She was born on November 18, 1944, in Clarksburg, WV, the middle child of the late Earnest J. and Althea M. (Chamberlain) Kidd.

Jeanette was a fiercely independent woman with a caring, compassionate, and spunky personality that endeared her to everyone who knew her. She enjoyed camping in her RV, watching HGTV, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Jeanette took great pride in her home, especially in planting and tending to her flowers. Above all else, she cherished time spent with her grandchildren and loved being surrounded by her family.

Her life was marked by profound loss, yet she met each challenge with strength and resilience. Jeanette’s husband, Howard E. Shields, Sr., was tragically killed in 1981 while working as a roller at Weirton Steel. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, James Shields and Luke Shields; two brothers, Earnest J. Kidd and Glenn R. Kidd; and two grandchildren.

Jeanette is survived by her loving children: Howard E. (Patti) Shields, Jr., Charles L. Shields, and Nancy Pearson; ten grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy for her.

Friends and relatives will be received on Sunday from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton.

  1. Cookie and me were friends for many decades. We saw many ups and downs in life. Both of ours. If I had one word to describe her it would be SASS. I like sassy people. We did get to laugh about quite a few things and laughter is good for the soul. She is at peace now with no more tests or no more pain. Until we meet again.
