Dr. John E. Capito, 71 of Weirton, WV passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the Weirton Medical Center. He was the second born of ten children to the late Dr. Emil and Evelina Tassan Capito. John was raised in Weirton, WV. He graduated from Madonna High School, attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1971 with a degree in pharmacy. After six years of practicing in the field of pharmacy, he decided to further his education by pursuing a degree in medicine at Central Eastern University School of Medicine. He did his post-graduate work at UPMC Shadyside and St. Francis Medical Center, both located in Pittsburgh, PA. He completed his residency in 1984 and returned to Weirton to join his father, Dr. Emil Capito, in medical practice. Dr. John Capito was Board Certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). He had been nationally certified as a Medical Review Officer (MRO) and he was nationally certified and listed in the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. In 2012, 2013 and 2015, Dr. Capito was designated the “Best of the “Best” in the Readers’ Choice selection of Best Family Physician and Best Internal Medicine Doctor in the Weirton/Steubenville newspapers. Dr. Capito was on the teaching staff of several universities, including The West Virginia University School of Medicine where he was listed as a Clinical Assistant Professor. At the time of his passing, he maintained his license as a Registered Pharmacist and had APHA precertification as a diabetic educator (CDE) In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Capito had been involved in the Catholic School System of both the City of Weirton and the State of West Virginia. He served as President of the Madonna Athletic Board and was the Madonna High School Football team physician for over 25 years. He also served on and was President of the School Board of St. Joseph the Worker Grade School and two terms as School Board President of Madonna High School. In the mid 1990’s, Dr. Capito and his family were instrumental in the major renovation of Madonna High School. For his extraordinary contributions to Catholic Schools, he was the recipient of the Bishop’s Cross by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston in 2004 and in 2012 was inducted into Madonna High School’s first Hall of Fame Class. Dr. Capito was married to Darlene Capito, a Registered Pharmacist who practices locally and serves as a diabetic educator at John’s office. John and Dar have two sons; John Capito II, of Pittsburgh, who is in the field of computer technology, and Joseph Capito, of Morgantown, who is currently a resident in Family Practice at the WVU School of Medicine. Dr. Capito and his family have enjoyed traveling through the years and have the distinction of having visited 48 continental U.S. states, and the 50 biggest U.S. cities together. They are well known for their unique family Christmas cards. In the fall of 2013, he was chosen as a featured artist at the Summit Art Gallery for his work in the area of Thematic Pop Art Photography. Dr. Capito was an avid fan of the Godfather movies, a history buff and collector of antique Volkswagen Beetles. In addition to his wife Darlene Javorsky Capito and sons John E. Capito II and Joseph E. Capito, MD, John is survived by brother’s David L. (Peggy) Capito of Augusta, GA, Robert A. (Patty) Capito of Weirton, Dr. Charles (Debbie) Capito of Imperial, PA, Dr. Richard (Lorrie) Capito of Charlestown, WV, Michael “Freddie” (Anita) Capito of Weirton, Dr. Joseph (Jennifer) Capito of Wheeling and Dr. Paul (Wendy) Capito of Salisbury, NC and sisters Anna Marie (James) Fulton of Weirton and Patricia (Victor Ray) Greco of Wheeling. Friends will be received on Friday from 1-7 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 noon Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church. Revered Father Anthony G. Thurston will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Weirton.
