Mark (Hoss) Cowden of Weirton passed away in the presence of God and his family on Monday, January 1, 2024, at Allegheny General Hospital after a long, hard-fought battle with long-term side effects of Covid-19.
Hoss was born in Steubenville, Ohio on January 25, 1965 to loving parents, Mr. Robert S. Cowden Sr. and Mrs. Patricia A. Cowden.
Hoss was a 1983 graduate of Weir High School and proceeded on to West Liberty State College followed by the West Virginia State Police Academy in 1989. Hoss was a much-respected officer of the law for 27 years in which his dedication and courage were apparent to so many.
Hoss was a lover of many things: his family, his dogs, running, lifting weights, hunting and fishing, riding his motorcycle, karaoke, country music, western movies, sports, gardening, and most of all, The Lord.
Hoss was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church where his love for Our Lord and Savior shined so brightly. Hoss has had such a deep, loving impact on so many. Hoss’s humor was unmatched. He could make anyone smile and loved to tell jokes to anyone who’d listen.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert S. Cowden Sr.
Hoss is survived by his wife, Christal Cowden; his daughters, Elise [Ryan] Fullerton and Liz [Donald] Welch; his mother, Patricia A. Cowden; his brothers Robert Cowden Jr. and David Cowden; his brothers and sisters in law, his aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and his beloved pooch, Clancy.
Family, friends, and those who have been touched by Hoss’s kind heart are invited to Open Door Baptist Church at 3432 Eldersville Rd, Colliers, WV 26035, from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2024, to reminisce on all the many Hoss stories, grieve, and support one another amid such a loss.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved son, husband, father, and brother. May his memory eternal.
I am so saddened. Such a good guy. My deepest sympathies to all.
Hoss was a man’s man, full of power and strength. I trained with Hoss in the 80’s. He blew up the gym. He was a magnet because of his strength, yes, but more so because of his charisma. Hoss was funny and fun. Witty. A lover of “come as you are” friendships. No pretenses. No flattery.
Hoss had an old soul. I always marveled at his respectful manner towards others, then I met his parents and it all made sense. Lovely family. I also marveled at his kindness towards those who might have been considered “long-shots”. Then I learned Hoss loved Jesus, and it all made sense. I regret that I won’t make it into Weirton for Hoss’ service. But, I’ll see Hoss again. I will. Because of the grace and goodness of Jesus Christ and His resurrection power, I’ll see Hoss again. Can’t wait!
Quick witted and always the jokester.
Hoss was always up for anything and everything. He didn’t know a stranger. He was the type of person that you knew you were blessed to have as a friend.
You fought long and hard. Your watch is over, we have it from here.
God’s Speed my friend
I have so many memories of working with Mark. Instructive, collaborative and extremely funny. I am saddened by his passing and for your loss. Sharon Bogarad
I was saddened to hear of your great loss of Mark. However, we KNOW he is not lost, but instead, found in the presence of our Lord. This is not his end but his glorious new beginning. You have my deepest sympathy.
I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mark (Hoss). He had such a fun, affable personality and I always loved talking with him in the gym. I’ll forever remember him drinking his signature black coffee then crushing through rep after rep of an exercise. I loved his stories and wisdom. Sending prayers and strength to his family. May his memory be eternal.
Dave and family, sorry for your loss.
It was a shock to read about the passing of Hoss. Our deepest condolences to you and your family. My husband Harold and I both worked with Hoss at the Jail and Hancock County Magistrate Court. He was a great person and will be greatly missed. God Bless You All.
Here is a candle in his memory.

I remember working out with you when I was a young man. You influenced my life in a very positive way. You were a good person and I’m sad to hear you are no longer on this plane.
So deeply saddened for your loss Pat. I will always remember bible study with Mark, Crystal, Bob and Our wonderful inspiring teacher. YOU radiate light. I will never forget how thoughtful and surprised I was when Mark came to my mom’s funeral. He was way too young to go, but he is the lucky one. GOD Bless I love you!
