mary mihalyo
Mary Jane Mihalyo, a lifelong resident of Marland Heights in Weirton, passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2021, after a three and half year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was 70 years old. Mary Jane was born on February 15, 1951, in Steubenville, OH, the fourth-born daughter of Walter and Dorothy Jackson Briscoe. Mary graduated from Weir High School in 1969, where she was elected Honored Queen of Job's Daughters, an organization that fosters leadership, charity, and character-building in young women. After high school, Mary received an associate degree and worked at Denmark’s in Downtown Weirton. In 1972, while out with her friends, Mary met Andrew V. "Pinner" Mihalyo. On February 24, 1973, after a year of dating, Pinner and Mary were married at the Cove Presbyterian Church. In their 48 years of marriage, they were blessed with two sons and three grandchildren. Pinner worked at Weirton Steel, and Mary enjoyed working at Convenient Food Mart on Marland Heights for over twenty years. After Convenient closed, Mary enjoyed her time working, a couple of blocks from her home, at Sweet Temptations Pastry Shop. Many days, Mary would start her day on her front porch, sitting on her swing enjoying her morning coffee while watching the birds. She loved to walk on Marland Heights, and when the pool was open, she loved swimming and diving. Her schedule often revolved around the 1 PM airing of the Days of Our Lives. She loved to travel and would look forward to visiting her sister in Las Vegas, but nothing compared to the visits from her grandchildren taking them to Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV, to see the lights and walk through the flower gardens and zoo. Those cherished times will live on in the memories of her grandchildren. She was a passionate sport's fan of the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins and could quickly provide you with any player's stats. Most of all, Mary will be remembered for the love she had for her family. Her compassion, empathy, and supportive nature were felt by all who knew Mary. She faced her illness with such grace and dignity. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Brad Mihalyo, on November 18, 2014, and her sister, Nancy Kost, on April 24, 2007. Mary will be remembered with love and admiration by her husband, Andrew V. “Pinner” Mihalyo; her son, Brian J. Mihalyo; her brother, J. Briscoe (Cindy); her sisters, Sondra Olendorf and Judy House (Ken); and her loving grandchildren, Brya Grace, Alyssa Marie and Caleb Matthew Mihalyo. Mary's family is honoring her request for cremation without any traditional services. Mary’s family would like to thank Valley Hospice and the Weirton Medical Cancer Center Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute for all the love and care they provided for Mary in the last three and a half years.
