Michael Horvat, 89, of West Street, Weirton, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in the Weirton Medical Center. He was born March 28, 1921 in McKees Rocks, PA, a son of the late James (Ali) and Mary Hydro Hassan. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael James Horvat. Mike retired as Supervisor of the Production and Planning Department of National Steel Corporation on February 1, 1980. Mike was Greek Catholic by faith and a member of the Weirton Last Man's Club of World War II, Weirton Elks Lodge 1801, VFW #2716, American Legion Post 10 and Weirton Moose Lodge #688. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne Infantry during World War II with service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Burma and South Asia. He was recalled into service for the Korean War. His military awards included Paratrooper Wings, Combat Infantry Badge, five Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife Emily Mininni Horvat, whom he married May 11, 1952; son David Michael Horvat; daughter Michele McAbee and her husband Dennis all of Weirton; two granddaughters Lacey Horvat Bannon of Pittsburgh, PA and MacKenzie McAbee, a student at Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. Friends will be received Thursday from 5-8PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton where funeral services will be conducted at 10AM Friday. The Minister Larry Barkley will officiate. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton where Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion Firing Squad.
