Michael Roland Sponaugle, 71, of Colliers, passed away peacefully at his residence in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 29, 2025, with his loving family by his side.
Born on April 27, 1954, in Steubenville, OH, Mike was a son of Cecil Roland and Lula Mae Jones Sponaugle. A 1972 graduate of Brooke High School, Mike dedicated over 35 years of hard work and service to the former Weirton Steel before his retirement.
Mike was a true outdoorsman. He was an avid hunter and created many memories with his sons and best friends. They enjoyed hunting trips downstate at Conway Lake and fishing trips to Lake Erie. He also pursued deer, squirrel, and turkey in the woodlands of Brooke County, particularly around Archer Heights, and as a member of the Colliers Sportsman Club.
Music was another deep passion in Mike’s life. A talented performer, he played with several bands, including the Southern Nights and Deja Vu Bands, entertaining crowds throughout the Ohio Valley. One of the highlights of his musical journey was performing at the legendary Jamboree in the Hills. Following a performance one year, Mike was in the presence of country music legend Johnny Paycheck, enjoying some memorable quality time with him.
His love for crab legs was well known among his family and friends, as was his devotion to his Baptist faith, which he nourished throughout his life.
Mike spent a portion of his life living in Clover, South Carolina, creating lasting memories before returning to West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jordan Sponaugle and Jonathon Kazienko.
