penny castelli
Penny Jo Castelli of Weirton passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021, following an eight-year battle with renal cell carcinoma. She was 72. Penny was born in Moundsville, WV, on February 9, 1949, to Charles and Ruby Grimm. Her family moved from Moundsville, to Baltimore, MD, eventually settling in the Follansbee – Colliers, WV area, where she graduated from Follansbee High School in 1967. After high school, Penny's adventurous nature led her and a friend to Washington DC, where she found work and lived independently. The unrest that followed the assasination of Martin Luther King, Jr. was a deciding factor for Penny to move back toWest Virginia to be with family. At a popular nightspot, The Heart of Town, she met John Castelli. They married on October 22, 1972. Over the last fifty years, Penny and John were blessed with three sons, three daughters in law and four grandchildren. While John worked at the family business, Weir Cove Moving and Storage, Penny worked taking care of their home and family. She was an active contributor volunteering in our community for Make-a-Wish and the Sexual Abuse Help Center, as well as taking community leadership roles such as helping organize the Weirton Food Festivals. Once her sons were grown, in a move that exemplified her bold and courageous nature given her lifelong fear of flying, Penny embarked on a new career as a flight attendant for US Airways. For ten years this job was a source of pride and joy, only retiring due to her diagnosis. She will always be remembered for her toughness, resilience, and commitment to self-improvement. In addition to her parents, Penny was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Grimm. She was loved and admired by all who knew her, but especially by her family: her husband, John Castelli, her three sons and their wives: Dr. Christopher Castelli and Dr. Emily Castelli, Dr. Jon-Michael and Holli Castelli, and Andrew Castelli and Ashley Norman. She was an adored Grammy to Christopher and Emily's children, Sam and Lucy. And to Jon-Michael and Holli's two daughters Cora and Eva, she will always be Mimi. Visitation will be 4:00 PM-7:00PM Friday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV, where funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Make A Wish Foundation. Share tributes and memories at www.grecohertnick.com 304-748-3219.

  19. It is because of all the fond memories that we have the ability to grieve. With a heavy heart I send my condolences and my supportive thoughts go out to the entire family. However, I find a smile take over my face when I remember Penny. I can remember in high school, spending many days at the Castelli household. I loved going there not only to hang out with Chris but also because I enjoyed being around the entire family. Penny was always creating something in the kitchen or ready to listen or tell a story and all while smiling and looking beautiful! The perfect blend of being a parent and a wise friend. She will be missed but not forgotten. Much Aloha, Jessica Wieloh
