Richard T Sherensky, loving husband, beloved father, pappy, brother, and uncle passed away suddenly Friday, April 21, 2023, at Weirton Medical Center surrounded by loving family members. He was 79.

Rich was born December 30, 1943, in Steubenville, son of the late Henry and Frances Slatniske Sherensky . He graduated in 1961 from Weirton Madonna High School, served 4 years in the U S Air Force as an air policeman, 25 years as a City of Weirton police officer, retiring as a lieutenant. He also received his associate degree in criminal justice and served as Chief Deputy of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

A devoted Catholic, Rich was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Church where he served as a Minister of the Eucharist, altar server and president of the former Holy Name Society. He was also a past president of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of the Knights of Columbus 3734, and Weirton Post 10 of the American Legion.

He and the former Connie Fletcher were married November 5, 1966. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Connie, their daughter, Jannae (James Beeman); granddaughters, Sydney of California, and Adriana of Weirton; one brother, Edward (Agnes) Sherensky of Chambersburg, PA; one sister, Mickey (David) Kinney of Hendersonville, TN, brother-in-law, Ralph (Beki) Fletcher of Weirton; several nieces and nephew and great nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV.

The Weirton Police Department will pay their respects at 3 PM.
The Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7:30 PM.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM on Tuesday, at Sacred Heart of Mary Church with Rev Fr Tony Thurston officiating, followed by interment with Military Honors at St Paul’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart of Mary Church or a charity of your choice.

  17. I am so sorry to hear of Richards passing. He was a mentor to me in 1979 when WPD hired me and was one of my favorite officers. I left WPD in 1983 to start policing in Dallas, Texas. I never got to say goodbye but still have many great memories of Richard and our crew. May God grant you all comfort.
