Sam Wonkovich
February 12, 1908 ~ November 11, 2000
Sam Wonkovich 92, of Weirton, died November 11, 2000, at the Weirton Medical Center. He was born February 12, 1908, in Shoaf, Pa., the son of the late John and Martha Gotch Wonkovich. He was also preceeded in death by three brothers, George, Mike and Petelo, and three sisters, Ann, Millie, and Sophie.
He retired from Stone and Thomas of Weirton in 1977, where he served as store manager for 26 years. He was a WWII Army veteran. He was also a retired Lt. Col. with the Army Reserves, where he served during the Berlin Crisis. He was a former member of the Weirton Kiwanis, and Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the VFW and Past Kum of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Milanovich Wonkovich of Weirton, whom he married on December 20, 1941. One son David Wonkovich and his wife Branka of Independence, Ohio. Three grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle, and Mark Wonkovich all of Independence, Ohio
Calling hours are from 7-9PM Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 PM, Tuesday, at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton, WV. Pomen service,
Monday evening at 8:30PM in the funeral home. Mr. Wonkovich will lie in state at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church in Steubenville, Ohio on Wednesday from 10:00AM until time of service at 11:00PM. Interment will follow at the Serbian Cemetery, in Weirton, WV.

Although I cannot be there in person, my thoughts are with you all in Weirton. Uncle Sam was a strong-spirited man, one who stuck by what he believed in. I remember him vividly from the time I was a very young child playing at Baba’s house and as a helpful soul during my mother’s illness. May peace be with you, Uncle Sam. Love, Denise
You have my deepest sympathy. Uncle Sam was an intelligent, opinionated man who backed up his beliefs with his actions. Although his manner could be gruff at times, there was always a twinkle in his eye and a goodness in his deeds that let you know what was going on in his heart. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
