Sophie Vagnoni, 94, of Weirton, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the Weirton Medical Center. She was born January 2, 1908, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Konstanty and Josephine Luczak Rybka. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Vagnoni in 1997; a daughter, Monica in 1948; two brothers, John and former Mayor of Weirton, Frank Rybka; and two sisters, Mary Vagnoni and Helen Rusinovich. Sophie retired in 1941 from Weirton Steel where she worked as a Tin Mill Sorter. During her career, she traveled as a Weirton Steel representative teaching tin mill sorting in Detroit, Chicago, New York and Cleveland. Sophie is survived by a sister, Clara Almason Battista of Weirton; sister-in-laws Irene Rybka, Evelyn Spencer and Louise Vagnoni all of Weirton and Christine Ciarrocchi of Tampa Bay, FL; Nieces and nephews, Stephen and Karen Almason, John Rybka, Jr., Kathy and Romie Castelli, Marlene and Mike Runkle all of Weirton, William and Paula Vagnoni of New Manchester, WV, David and Sally Almason of Huntersville, NC, Rosemarie and Harry Givens of Bowie, MD, Christie Fox, and Francis and David Huey of Tampa, Florida; 9 great nieces and 11 great nephews. Sophie was a member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, a Christian Mother and, at one time, was active in the Hancock County Sheltered Workshop. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 1, 2001 from 2:00 – 4:00PM and 7:00 – 9:00PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Funeral liturgy and mass will be held at 10:00AM on Friday at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Father Tony Thurston presiding. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery.
