Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Theda Coula Herman (Costadi), age 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 2, 2026, in DeWitt, MI.
Born on February 8th, 1930, in Weirton, to Nick and Alice Costadi, Theda was the second born of four girls and had an active childhood.
A graduate of Weir High School in 1947, Theda finished seventh in her class and won awards for shorthand. After school, she worked for a financial advisor until she became a mother.
Theda had three children, Alice, Nick, and Jamie.
A lifelong resident of Weirton and member of St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, she worked for fifteen years at Sarvey’s Grocery Store, then another twelve years as a cashier at Walmart, where she won Employee of the Month awards.
Warm and welcoming, Theda could talk to anyone and made friends everywhere she went. She was close to her neighbors and had many lifelong friends, some even to this day.
Theda had many hobbies, including a great love for birds and gardening, and spent many days tending to her beautiful flower garden — her beloved daffodils still bloom in her yard each spring. She enjoyed music and playing cards, and later in life discovered a love of art and painting.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Vivian Cwiczynski, Alice Plesich, and Thelma Cully, and her son Nick Herman, who passed away in 2019.
Theda is survived by her children Alice (George) Kitson and Jamie; her daughter-in-law, Anna Herman; her seven grandchildren George (Amy), Nicole (Nate) Floyd, and Alicia (Tom) Kitson, Samantha (Daniel) Odorisio, Nicholas, Rachel, and Ryan Herman; her eight great-grandchildren George and Mae Kitson, Charley and Maxine Floyd, Carter, Siena, Romeo and Talia Odorisio; along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
Out of a desire to do a good thing and help others, Theda chose to donate her body to science through Michigan State University.
A celebration of Theda’s life will be held at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV. 26062, at a time and date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to The Urban Mission, 311 N 6th Street, Steubenville, OH. 43952.
Theda will be deeply missed and loved forever.

To all those who knew and loved Theda, please accept my sincere sympathy. I have fond memories of our neighborhood. I have a treasured memento from Theda and Alice. Fifty-five years ago they gave me a cookbook for my wedding shower and signed it. I still use that cookbook and think of them.
May memories give you peace.
Sarveys she was a wonderful lady I would bump in to her from time to time and we would catch up. My sincere condolences on your loss.
