Evelyn R. Bissett, 96, of New Cumberland, WV, passed away on December 30, 2024.
Born on February 5, 1928, in Woodruff, WV, Evelyn was one of ten children born to the late Arthur and Edith (McNeely) Earnest.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George G. Bissett, who tragically passed away on November 8, 1957, as the result of an accident at the Weirton Steel Mill. Widowed at the young age of 29, Evelyn faced the daunting challenge of raising their two sons, ages 8 and 6, with strength, unwavering devotion, and help from her family.
Evelyn was also preceded in death by her siblings, Arnold Earnest, Margaret Gosney, Imogene Blake, Doris Moore, and Sarah Moore.
Before her marriage in 1948, Evelyn worked at the Fostoria Glass Plant in Moundsville, WV.
A woman of deep faith, she was a devoted member of the Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, where she found strength and fellowship throughout her years. She enjoyed volunteering her time as a seamstress for the American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard.
Evelyn will be remembered with love and admiration by her sons, Larry “Jim” (Judy) Bissett of New Cumberland, WV, and Wayne (Brina Schons) Bissett of Weirton, WV. She is also survived by her siblings, Freda (John) West, Carolyn Drizake of Weirton, WV, Linda Kinsey of Utica, OH, and David (Joy) Earnest of New Cumberland, WV.
Evelyn’s legacy lives on through her six grandchildren: Julie (Greg) McFadden, Joseph (Kristin) Bissett, Melanie (Chris) Coffield, Brian (Jill) Bissett, Aaron Schons, and Amanda (Ryan) Irvin-Pulice; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 PM until the time of funeral services at 6 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV
Rev. William Stout will preside.
She will be laid to rest next to her husband.
Evelyn’s family would like to thank the staff of Golden Acres and Weirton Geriatric Center for their compassion and care for their mother and grandmother for the last three years.
