Dr. John (Bert) Umberto Fazi, DDS of Weirton, loving husband, father, and grandfather died on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at his residence with his family by his side. He was ninety years old.

John was the son of Alfredo and Maria Santarelli Fazi.

John was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church and served his country proudly in the United States Army from 1957-1960. He was a member of the 1949 graduating class of Follansbee High School where he was a four-star athlete. He earned his undergraduate in 1953 from the College of Steubenville and proceeded to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1957 achieving the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery.

While in the Army, Captain Fazi was stationed in Verona, Italy as a practicing dentist for the enlisted soldiers and commissioned officers. After returning home from the Army, Dr. Fazi was in dental practice in Weirton for over forty years.

John met his soulmate, Sylvia Ferliga while they were students at The College of Steubenville, and they were later married on June 27, 1953.

John’s family describes him as a wonderful man who loved his family and all their accomplishments. His wife Sylvia recalls that while John was practicing in Weirton, “He would whistle while he had patients in his office, and he certainly enjoyed his work.” She also added, “He loved to dance, sing, and listen to Italian Opera.”

With all the joy his family brought to their lives, John and Sylvia were never without extra excitement. They would regularly travel to Lake Garda, Italy, and winter in Lauderdale by the Sea in Florida, and John was always accompanied by his beloved and lovely travel companion Sylvia.

John held memberships within the Knights of Columbus Council 3734, Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity, and the Wheeling, West Virginia Dental Association.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Candle Selection 5Dr. Fazi was my childhood dentist and I spent a lot time with his family having been roommates with his son for many years. We traveled together overseas to visit what was once the USSR (now Russia) for a once in a lifetime experience. I had the pleasure of working with his grandchildren as medical students at WVU. He was quite a gentle man who loved his family. We hope the memories you share will sustain you during your time of grief. May he rest in peace.

  2. Dr. Fazi was a wonderful man and the best dentist. We truly missed him and Lois when they retired. It is good that he enjoyed his retirement and lived life to the fullest. Our sincere sympathies. Andi and Joe Paolo

  3. Bert was a fraternity brother and a great friend as well as our dentist. Someone we will never forget. Love and sincere sympathy to his family and friends. Happy to have known him.

  4. He was my Uncle Bert and always had time for me and eased my fears when I sat in that dentist’s chair. When I was in high school, he tutored me in algebra and would let me drive his Mustang!! He had the best sense of humor and always had me laughing. He never made me feel that I wasn’t important just because I was a kid. He was kind and smart and humble and did and gave his best in everything he did. I am a better person because of him and his example and was lucky to have him for my uncle. I will miss him and love him for the rest of my life.

  5. Could not have asked for a better neighbor…or dentist! Our family referred to him as Big Bert. Such a wonderful, kind man! My condolences to Sylvia, Little Bert 🤓, and Lisa.

  6. Candle Selection 8Lisa and family
Your father was my dentist for well over 15 years. Only to moving, he would have remained my dentist. He was he absolute BEST ever !!!! Always whistling and joking with me while nervously sitting in the dental chair. However, after a few minutes, I didn’t even realize he had already finished filling my cavity. I have yet to find a dentist to hold a candle to him. Greatly and sadly missed.

I want to express my sympathies on the passing of your family member. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers, during this difficult time.
Dr. Fazi was my dentist, and I liked him a lot.
I hated going to the dentist, until I started going to him. He was ALWAYS in a cheerful mood, and he would make me laugh and 😊.
Remember: Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, but Love leaves memories that no one can steal.
    God Bless You All

  11. Candle Selection 3Deepest Sympathy to the Fazi Family,
Dr Fazi was my dentist for many years. He certainly cured me of my fears
of the dental chair. He never hurt me and was so kind and soft spoken.
    May his memory be eternal.

  12. Doctor Fazi did dental work on me when we lived in Weirton back ” then”. Over a LONG period of time around 1995 or so, I broke a tooth that he had repaired for me. The Doc working on asked who had done that original repair and I said, Doctor Fazi in Weirton WV around 1970. He then said, ” well he really did an excellent job as I can’t hardly get the old filling out ” !! I also recall that Doc Fazi was a REALLY good person. He did a pretty major tooth for me once, and that evening he called me to see how I was doing. I always appreciated his professionalism and his strong heart to care for his patients. RIP my Friend.
